Local sports roundup Marlborough - The seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball team of the Immaculate Conception School of Marlborough reached the final of the Catholic League, where it lost a hard-fought contest, 24-20, to Holy Name of Worcester. Members of the team are Shannon Condon, Marnie Cormier, Devan Egan, Katherine Finnegan, Marissa Flynn, Samantha Keville, Lauren Priess, Sarah Purcell, Juliana Sullivan, Crystal Volpe, Loan Vuong and Katherine Zachilli. Head coach of the team was Matt Finnegan and the assistant coach was Brian Egan. In the final, Condon paced the team defensively, stealing the ball several times and blocking many shots. Cormier led the team's off ensive eff ort, scoring nine points. Holy Name led, 9-4, after the first half and pushed the lead to 16-8, before Immaculate Conception roared back to tie the game, 16-16, on a three-point play by Cormier with less than five minutes to play. The lead see-sawed back and forth after that, with Holy Name going ahead for good with less than a minute left in the game. This was Immaculate Conception's first trip to the final since 2003 and it looks forward to playing for the title again next year. Men's softball league announces signups The Over 50 More or Less Westborough Men's Softball League is inviting any able-bodied, or not-so-ablebodied, man 47 years old or over to join. The league includes players of all skill levels, and everyone who shows up plays and gets at least one at-bat. The league operates Sunday mornings from May to July and the only requirement for being able to play is a desire to have fun. The league can accept up to 16 non-Westborough residents. The Shrewsbury Special Needs program was wellrepresented in the Special Olympics Winter Games this year, its four basketball teams and its ski team winning several awards. Of the Senior Division basketball teams, the Pioneers won the Gold Medal while the Dribblers won Silver and the Rebounders received a fourth-place ribbon. In the Junior Division, the Colonials won a Bronze Medal. In the sport of alpine skiing, eight skiers won multiple medals. Among the intermediate skiers, Chris Balma won a Gold Medal in the Giant Slalom and a Silver Medal in the Downhill. Michael Ciociolo won a Bronze in the Giant Slalom, a Silver in the Downhill. Lizzy Fossum won a Silver Medal in both events, while Katie Meyer, Amy Silva and Kim VanAtten all won Gold Medals in both events. Michael Wilson won a Silver Medal in the Giant Slalom and a fourth-place ribbon in the Downhill. Among the advanced skiers, Gregory Gallant won Gold Medals in both the Giant Slalom and the Downhill.
