Lebeaux seeks state senate seat
By Melissa Muntz Community Reporter

Shrewsbury - Shrewsbury Selectman John Lebeaux is seeking election to the 2nd Worcester Senate District seat that will be vacated by State Sen. Edward M. Augustus Jr., D-Worcester, at the end of this term.

Lebeaux has served as a Town Meeting member since the age of 18, and has sat on the Board of Selectmen since 1998.

He is a member of the Massachusetts Food and Agriculture Board, the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission, and the Corridor Nine Chamber of Commerce, and has also served on the Shrewsbury Zoning Board of Appeals.

Lebeaux is a 1972 graduate of Shrewsbury High School and a 1976 graduate from Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

He is the general manager of Shrewsbury Nurseries, a family business started in 1947 by his father, Reuben Lebeaux, who passed away Feb. 20, 2008.

Lebeaux is currently the only Republican vying for the seat, a decision that was made only after State Rep. Karyn E. Polito, R-Shrewsbury, announced that she would not seek election to the senate.

The other two candidates for the 2nd Worcester Senate District seat are Michael Moore of Millbury and Douglas Belanger of Leicester, both of whom are Democrats and selectmen in their respective towns.
