Hudson High starts boys, girls

lacrosse teams

The lacrosse era at Hudson High began April 7 when the Hawks girls team played at Fitchburg High. The boys team opened its season April 8 at Assabet Valley Regional.

Both teams will compete as junior varsity teams for two seasons before becoming varsity programs. The boys turnout was so good in fact, 33, that Hawks will also field a freshman boys team this year.

The girls will be coached by Kathy Ekdahl, who also coaches field hockey at the school. The boys teams will be coached by Doug Gold.

Both teams will be self-funded for the first two years by a parent organization that worked in conjunction with Hudson High School Athletic Director Luis Macedo as well as the Hudson Recreation Department. The fund-raising arm of the parent organization is in the process of raising the $18,000 it will take to finance the program this year and next.

The girls team opened its home season April 9 against Oakmont Regional at Riverside Park, while the boys team will open its home season at Riverside Park Tuesday April 15, when it hosts Shrewsbury High. Contact Ken Powers at kpthesportsguy@yahoo.com with your team's sports news.
