Green Marlborough organizes Earth Day fair

Marlborough - To celebrate Earth Day, Green Marlborough, a group of city residents and employees, will have an Earth Day Fair Saturday May 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Sunday May 4 from noon to 3 p.m.

With about 50 exhibits and activities, this first annual Marlborough Earth Day Fair will have a lot to off er, including educational displays on energy, water, recycling, food, and transportation, "green" cars such as a veggie oil car and electric hybrids, an Evergreen solar panel and other alternative-energy products, and information about where to buy locallygrown food.

There will also be exhibits and local experts from Marlborough area businesses, organizations and city departments, such as a home energy efficiency expert, an energy expert on solar electric and solar hot water options, an exhibit from the Marlborough Conservation Department, and free food from local stores and bakeries.

Activities for the family are to include face painting, cookie-baking in a solar oven, a wild animal puppet show, a toss-the-trash recycling game, and a plant-aseed in a peat cup activity.

There will also be many "green" giveaways such as garden seeds, recycling bins, reusable water bottles, watersaving kits for your home, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), pens made from recycled materials, homeenergy audit brochures, non-toxic-home information, and more.

The Marlborough Earth Day Fair will be at Ghiloni Park (on Concord Road near the golf course), a good gathering site for the whole community. People are encouraged to walk, bike, carpool or drive the family's most fuel-efficient vehicle to get there.

The Earth Day Fair is aimed at educating residents about sustainability and encouraging them to learn more about helping the environment in our own community, and in our own homes and businesses.

This event is coinciding with the Mayor's Clean Sweep, which will take place at the Memorial Beach parking lot on Hosmer Street from 9 a.m. to noon May 3.

Green Marlborough is a group of concerned residents and employees from the local community dedicated to working together on environmental issues to make a diff erence locally. Their goal is to actively work together on energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, residential and business energy education, better transportation choices, tree planting, recycling, land and water conservation, and more. The group welcomes all local residents who wish to step forward and offer their ideas, time and expertise in Marlborough.
