Ms. Stevens goes to Washington
Marlborough - Mayor Nancy Stevens recently visited policy-makers in our nation's capital to share Marlborough's concerns about the millions of dollars needed to upgrade the city's two wastewater treatment plants in order to meet an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirement. The mandate's goal to reduce phosphorus levels in the Assabet River is certainly a worthy one, but officials were left reeling last fall after the project to upgrade the westerly treatment plant alone was estimated at up to $47 million. One of Stevens's main concerns is that EPA requirements sometimes seem like moving targets, with no assurance that these pricey upgrades will guarantee future compliance.
