SUBMITTED (l to r) Kira Porter and Amy Schoon pose for pictures while visiting after the women's hockey game between St. Michael's and New England College. Region - Amy Schoon was 62 miles from her Southborough home and 116 miles from her St. Michael's college dorm room when she saw something in mid-January that delighted and puzzled her at the same time.

Amy, a senior forward on the Knights' women's hockey team, was in the locker room at New England College in Henniker, N.H., preparing for her game against the Pilgrims when St. Michael's coach Chris Donovan told her that she had a fan at the game.

Amy, who helped start the girls ice hockey team at Algonquin Regional High School during her time there knew her parents would be there, like they usually were, but didn't know who this fan might be or why her coach would know she had a fan at the game.

So Amy followed Donovan to the ice, where she saw 9-yearold Kira Porter, who is also from Southborough, holding a sign with her name on it.

"It was really crazy and very surprising all at the same time," Amy said of seeing this girl she didn't know holding a sign with her name on it. "It was amazing to skate out there and have someone other than my family cheering for me. And Kira was adorable, beating on glass, cheering so hard. It was just so cute."

After the game Amy learned that Kira's uncle, an avid hockey fan, lives near New England College and brought Kira, who is interested in hockey, to the game. Prior to going to the game the pair looked up the St. Michael's roster online and realized that Amy, like Kira, was from Southborough, and Kira decided to make a sign for Amy.

Amy visited with Kira after the game until she had to board the bus for the trip back to Colchester, and gave her an autographed puck and posed for pictures with her new fan.

Since then, Kira - who received a hockey stick for Christmas from her uncle - has attended Amy's game against Nichols College, which was played in Burriville, R.I., and Norwich (Vt.) University.

Amy is hoping to take Kira to stick time at a rink near Southborough when she is home for spring break. Hudson Catholic honors athletes
