Region - "The Amazing Race" came to Marlborough May 31 as competing teams raced around the city, striving to arrive first at "pit stops" at the end of each leg of the race. Seventeen teams from the greater Marlborough area signed up to participate in the Marlboro Lions Club's version of the CBS reality show.

Participants were given maps to the city and were required to drive to various locations throughout the city to compete in a variety of tasks. The clues in each leg pointed the teams to the next destination or directed them to perform a task, either together or by a single member. These challenges were related in some manner to the place where they were located.

The competitors completed such tasks as answering questions at the Marlborough Historical Society, building a birdhouse at the wooden toy workshop (Trombetta's Creamery), catching water balloons at Wayside Racquet and Swim Club, and shooting hoops at Kane School. Once the task was completed, they were given the location of the next task. The race ended at the Main Street Café, where a free spaghetti dinner was served to all participants and awards were given to the fastest group and couple teams.

Randy Scott, a longtime member of the Lions Club, was one of the organizers.

"This was our first year doing it, but we will definitely make this an annual event," Scott said. "Participants are already asking how they can sign up for next year's race."

Proceeds from the race will support many of the charitable activities the Lions Club does for the community such as scholarships, hearing aids and Christmas baskets for the needy.
