Marlborough High football standout A.C. Carter will continue academic, athletic career at the University of San Diego
Region – Marlborough High Senior A.C. Carter, who helped lead the Panthers to a 12-1 record in the fall, has verbally committed to attend the University of San Diego (USD). Carter, who was scheduled to sign an officia l Lette r o f Intent Feb. 3 in the Marlborough High School library, made his decision soon after an official visit to USD Jan 22 to 24. He chose the Toreros over a number of other schools interested in his services, including Holy Cross, Brown, Colgate, Sacred Heart and Wagner. The Toreros were 4-7 last year under Ron Caragher, who will enter his fourth year as head coach of the team next fall. Carter, a two-way player at running back and defensive back for Marlborough High coach Sean Mahoney over the years, is expected to play safety for USD. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Carter was recently named to the 26-member Massachusetts All-State high school football team. He finished his career with the Panthers with more than 3,800 all-purpose yards and 40 touchdowns on off ense and more than 200 tackles on defense. Free throw shooting winners announced Congratulations are in order for the winners of the annual Knights of Columbus, John Boyle O’Reilly Council No. 85 basketball free throw shooting contest.Age-group winners included: Joey Smith and Alexa Nichols in the 10-year-old division; Connor Schoen and Emily Longo, 11-year-old division; Eric Latimer and Kristan Smith, 12-year-old division; Nick Bongi and Kerry Chen, 13-year-old division; Mike Callender and Olivia Montgomery, 14-yeear-old division. A record 49 boys and 23 girls competed in this year’s competition, the most in the 15 years Council No. 85 has sponsored the event. Helping run the event, held Jan. 25 at Westborough’s Gibbons Middle School, were Knights of Columbus Council No. 85 members John Strouse, Tom Shea, Guido Lonardo, Jim O’Connor, Dave Fay, Carroll Westgate, Herman Millet, Bob Kristan, Joe Puciarelli, Bob Gilmore, Jim Mello , Dave Cox and Fred Brown. Mass Attack Elite looking for players The Mass Attack Elite, an Under-16 fastpitch softball team that operates out of Auburn is looking for a frontline pitcher and a shortstop to play with the team this season. The team will participate in several college showcase softball tournaments this summer across the state, region and nation, including the national tournament. See the Red Sox play at Fenway April 19 The Northborough Recreation Department is sponsoring a bus trip to Fenway Park Monday April 19 to see the Boston Red Sox play the Tampa Bay Rays at 11:05 a.m. April 19 is also the day the 2010 Boston Marathon will be run, as well as the first day of April vacation for most school districts in the area. The bus will leave Melican Middle School at 8:15 a.m. The seats are located in the right grandstand, Section 89 and tickets cost $120 each. To register and pay for the trip, log onto www.northboroughrecreation. com or visit the department’s offic e o n th e first floor of Town Hall. If you log on to the department’s website to register for the trip, be advised that there are two Red Sox trips. Click on the Red Sox logo and choose the Boston vs. Tampa game. The Northborough Recreation department is also sponsoring a bus trip to see the Red Sox play the Orioles in Baltimore in June. Anyone interested in the Red Sox-Orioles trip may also visit the Northborough Recreation department website for more information or to register.
