Northborough – UMass-Amherst has chosen Robert House, a civil engineering major from Northborough, as one of 13 graduating seniors who was presented with 21st Century Leaders Awards during the 139th Annual Commencement May 23. The College of Engineering also selected House as the student speaker for its commencement ceremonies May 21.
The awards recognize students who are academically accomplished and who have contributed to the university through exceptional achievement or have enhanced the reputation of the campus.
Among many other activities, House organized this year's American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) New England Regional Concrete Canoe Competition, featuring over 150 students from 10 universities. He is the past president and publicity office r fo r th e UMass-Amherst ASCE Chapter.
The award recipients are nominated by faculty for strong leadership qualities, noteworthy original research, community service, the achievement of success by overcoming extraordinary personal circumstances, or public presentation through art, performance or athletic ability.
"The presentation of these awards during the undergraduate commencement helps focus the ceremony on the accomplishments of students," Chancellor Robert C. Holub said.
The recipients are given a plaque and a monetary award from the UMass-Amherst Alumni Association.
