Garden Club to celebrate 85th anniversary with special event

Northborough – For the Northborough Garden Club, one of the more prominent and long-lasting groups in Northborough, the last 85 years have been spent improving upon the beautiful scenery in the area.

For the anniversary of the formation of the group, a celebration is being planned for Saturday, March 13 from 1to 3 p.m. at the Northborough Public Library. The celebration, which will be open to the public, will have several things to commemorate the Garden Club’s storied and impressive history. Longtime Garden Club member and former president Francesca Bombara, is the organizer for the event and eagerly anticipates the celebration.

“It is wonderful,” Bombara said. “Absolutely.”

Bombara, who served as president for two separate terms and has been a club member for 15 years, thinks the celebration will be a culmination of all the hard work put in over the years. Events planned for the celebration include visits by invited guests from the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, former Garden Club presidents, local officials, an archive scrapbook, a slide show – which will be on display throughout the event — and refreshments.

Bombara believes these attractions will make for an interesting affair and something to share with the public.

“Everything we do is for the sake of the community,” Bombara said. “We are always just trying to give back to the community.”

Throughout the years, the club has been responsible for a number of important projects for the town, including the awarding of two $1,000 scholarships to students and yearly town beautification assignments. Bombara takes pride in the work put in by club members and is specifically pleased with the programs that have been used for education purposes.

“I think the ones that interest me the most are the ones that are hands-on and we do a workshop,” Bombara said. “I think people enjoy that more than anything. That’s the whole idea, to learn something and pass it on to someone else.”

Bombara is most looking forward to sharing the day with residents. It has been their assistance that has made a lot of things possible. It’s a time to give thanks and appreciation for those involved, and Bombara couldn’t be happier to do so.

“We are tremendously [appreciative],” Bombara said. “And, of course, if anyone comes who has an interest, we’d love to have them become members.”

Bombara is pleased to see the event come to fruition. Between her time spent in New York and Northborough, she has been involved in this line of work for more than 45 years. She is looking forward to the celebration.

“It’s been my main interest, really,” Bombara said. “When I came to Northborough I joined the club and I’ve loved every minute of it ever since.”
