Marlborough – Frederick B. Baker Jr., 79, died Wednesday Feb. 23, 2011 at UMass Memorial Health Care Center in Worcester after an illness. He was the husband of the late Carol E. (Shafer) Baker, who died in 2007.

He leaves his three sons, Robert Baker and his wife, Denise, of Millville, Mark Baker and his wife, Pamela, of Bellingham and Jeffrey Baker and his wife, Susan, of Boylston. He also leaves a sister, Judith Reynolds and her husband, Byron, of Marlborough, and five grandchildren, Nicole, Erika, Brandi, Stephen and Julia.

Born in Boston, the son of the late Frederick and Arlene (Gates) Baker, he had lived in Marlborough for most of his life. He was a 1948 graduate of Marlborough High School, where he played varsity football and track. He also graduated from the New England College of Pharmacy in 1957. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served as a medic attached to the First Marine Division.

Mr. Baker was a pharmacist for over 10 years at Toohey's Pharmacy of Hudson., retiring in 1997. Previously, he was employed at the former Lincoln Drug Store and was the owner and pharmacist at McCook's Pharmacy of Marlborough for several years.

He was a member of the Elks of Hudson, the Marlborough Masons and the Marlborough Country Club. He also was a member and former Vice President of the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce, and a two-way player for the former Marlborough Red Skins semi-pro football team.

Funeral services will be held Saturday Feb. 26, at 10 a.m., in the John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 57 Main St., Marlborough. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Evergreen Cemetery on Wilson Street, Marlborough. A time of visitation and celebration of his life will be held prior to services on Saturday in the funeral home from 9 to 10 a.m. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Relay For Life, Marlboro/Hudson (in memory of Fred and Carol Baker), 350 Plantation St., Worcester, MA 01604-1637.
