Update on water main break

Update on water main breakShrewsbury – The water break which occurred at 12 p.m. July 8 has been repaired and service restored. The break was located in a distribution line just east of Crescent Street along Route 9.

Residents will experience discolored water for a period of time as sediment was stirred up within the system resulting from the break and restoration of service. The level of discoloration will be dependent on the proximity to the break and those hydrants that will now have to be opened to release air from the system. The work of purging the system to remove air is ongoing and was scheduled to conclude on Saturday.

The discoloration condition will abate with time and is expected to end by Sunday. Residents should run the tap for a period to try and clear any discoloration. The water is safe for drinking, bathing, dish washing and cooking but may be unappealing, so bottled water for drinking may be the best choice for those residents with heavy discoloration overnight and tomorrow. Do not use washing machines or dishwashers if you are experiencing heavy discoloration as the result may not be satisfactory.

Residents are asked to check back periodically at the town of Shrewsbury web site, www.shrewsbury-ma.gov, to learn the latest information. Questions may be directed to the Town Manager at 1-508-954-2198
