Hudson – Joao S. Fontes, 76, died Monday Aug. 1, 2011, at Marlborough Hospital. He leaves his wife of 50-plus years, Emilia (Cunha) Fontes of Hudson.
Born and raised in Santa Maria, the Azores of Portugal, he was one of nine children of the late Jose and Emilia (Soares) Fontes and came to the United States in 1972.
Mr. Fontes was employed as a carpenter for several local companies in the area, most recently for Ray's Concrete Co. in Hudson. He took great pride in the care of his garden and the making of his own wine. He especially looked forward to the summer months at his beach home in Onset, where he and his family gathered for so many memorable and special occasions.
Besides his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Tony Fontes and his wife Luisa and Silvino Fontes and his wife Alda, all of Hudson; his four grandchildren, Ashley, Kyle, Brandon and Megan; his two brothers, Jose Fontes of Hudson and Manuel Fontes of Cumberland, R.I.; his two sisters, Angelina Braga of Hudson and Ana Fontes of Santa Maria, Azores; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, Antonio, Maria, Emilia and Conceicao.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday Aug. 5, at 9 a.m., in Saint Michael's Church, 21 Manning St., Hudson. Burial will follow in Saint Michael's Cemetery, Hudson. Calling hours are Thursday Aug. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Tighe-Hamilton Funeral Home, Inc. 50 Central St. Hudson.
