Hudson SEPAC hosts pediatric bipolar disorder program Sept. 13Hudson – The Hudson Special Education Parent Advisory Council is inviting the community to their free upcoming program on bipolar disorder, which will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Dr. Jessica Leavell will be giving the presentation on “Pediatric Bipolar and Other Disorders of Mood Regulation: An Exploration of Conceptualization and Intervention Across Environments (Home, Community, School)” from 7 to 9 p.m. in Room A-134 at the Hudson High School, 69 Brigham St.

In the past decade, pediatric bipolar disorder has come to be an exceedingly widespread diagnosis. However, it is also greatly controversial and not well understood due to limited research thus far. Therein lies the pragmatic issue of how to best conceptualize and help children with mood regulation difficulties in all aspects of their day to day lives.

This presentation, intended for both parents and school personnel, will delve into this problem beginning with a review of pediatric bipolar and other mood regulation disorders and discussion of their diagnostic controversies. A brief examination of the neurobiological and neuropsychological aspects of the disorder will be offered, and based on this the presenter's theory for conceptualizing children with these difficulties. There will also be a discussion of various evidence based interventions and, despite limited research, how they can be applied to children. Additionally, a model for intervention in the school will be offered. A question and discussion period will be provided to allow time to further explore this very thought provoking topic.
