Cactus & Succulent Show at Tower Hill Botanic Garden

Saturday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday Sept., 18, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tower Hill Botanic Garden is proud to host the 5th Annual Show and Sale presented by the Cactus & Succulent Society of Massachusetts. Visitors will be awestruck at the amazing and unusual forms, textures and colors of these rare plants specially adapted for arid conditions. Special lectures throughout the weekend will provide additional information and insight to this fascinating group of plants. Children can learn about cactus at a special planting station for kids. Vendors will offer plants and supplies for sale. The show is included with regular admission to Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Dr., Boylston. Southgate at Shrewsbury opens fall theater season

Business Briefs, Sept. 16 editionSouthgate at Shrewsbury and Mass Theatrica open their fall theatre season with the Gilbert & Sullivan classic “Iolanthe,” a comic operetta about lost and found love interwoven in the magical world of Fairyland. Directed by Stephanie Mann, with musical direction by Thomas Dawkins, this production also features Susan Craft, Angeliki Theoharis, Jennifer Sgroe and Thomas René Brennan. Performances will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m., at the Southgate Theatre, 30 Julio Dr., Shrewsbury. Refreshments will be served. Admission is $15. Commerce Bank holds Salvation Army clothing drive

Commerce Bank is holding its annual clothing drive for the Salvation Army in its 13 offices throughout Central Massachusetts. Articles of gently used clothing collected in Commerce Bank offices through Sept. 23 will be sold in local Salvation Army thrift stores, with the proceeds going to help fund the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Worcester. Clothing can be dropped off in collection bins at the following Commerce Bank office locations: 322 Maple St., Marlborough; 226 Boston Tpke., Shrewsbury; and 5 East Main St., Westborough. Worcester locations include 386 Main St., 11 Park Ave., 560 Park Ave., 993 Grafton St. and 451 Lincoln St.

 

Culinary Underground holds father, daughter workshop Sept. 23

St. Mary's Credit Union wins marketing award

St. Mary's Credit Union has won a “Golden Mirror Award of Merit” for a recent television advertising campaign. The award was presented by the Credit Union Executives Society (CUES), which is an independent professional development association for credit union executives. The ad, titled “A Better Credit Union,” aired last fall on local cable networks as well as during two Patriots football games. According to Anthony J. Battista, vice president of marketing, “the purpose of the ad was to enhance name recognition and visibility for the credit union during a time of year when people traditionally watch more television and scrutinize their banking relationships. As the big banks were transitioning away from free to fee products and consumers were becoming increasingly disenchanted, we wanted to be top-of-mind.”

 

Edward Jones to host Social Security, finance seminar

Barbara Cantwell, an Edward Jones financial advisor in Northborough, is hosting a “Social Security and Finance” seminar, a unique event for investors that mixes an educational investment seminar with a Social Security presentation. During the event, Cantwell will discuss an economic and market update. The seminar will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Edward Jones office, 367 West Main St., Northborough.
