Thomas P. Hennessy, 77Pocasset/Venice, Fla. – Thomas P. Hennessy, 77, formerly of Westborough, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, after a brave battle with cancer.

He leaves his wife and best friend, Judy (Hirshberg) Hennessy. He also leaves his children, Jim Hennessy and his wife, Tina, of Wakefield; Kerry Hennessy Mahar of Weymouth; Melissa Hennessy and her husband, Scott Leibs, of Grafton; Tammy Eisenhauer and her husband, Robert, of Suwanee, Georgia; Eric Marandett and his wife, Susan, of Wellesley; and Lynn James and her husband, Ron, of Woods Cross, Utah. Papa Tom was especially devoted to his nine grandchildren, Katy, Rachel, Jenna, Kyle, Lauren, Brady, Aidan, Lexie and Nicole.

Born in Stoneham and raised in Malden, he was the son of the late Ruth (Frederick) and Thomas P. Hennessy Sr. and the brother of David and William. He was a 1952 graduate of Malden High School, a 1961 graduate of Franklin Technical Institute and a 1986 graduate of Northeastern University. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. After a 39-year career as a network engineer with New England Telephone, now Verizon, he retired in 2000.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Pocasset Golf Club. He was also well-known for his spectacular vegetable gardens. A talented singer and music lover, he enjoyed barbershop harmony and performed for many years as a baritone with the Narragansett Bay Chorus of Providence and as a tenor for the Gateway Guardsmen of Framingham.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mr. Hennessy's memory to VNA of Cape Cod Hospice, 434 Route 134, Suite D3, South Dennis, MA 02660 or to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, PO Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284 with a memo for bladder cancer research.
