Marlborough – The Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) will hold its 2nd Annual Innovation Summit on Oct. 28 at the Marlborough Holiday Inn, 265 Lakeside Ave. The invitation-only event, which is co-sponsored by the Worcester law firm of Mirick O”Connell, will focus on the 40 or so Life Sciences companies that comprise the current Marlborough cluster.
The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center defines Life Sciences as “advanced and applied sciences that expand the understanding of human physiology and have the potential to lead to medical advances or therapeutic applications including, but not limited to, agricultural biotechnology, biogenerics, bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, biopharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical synthesis, chemistry technology, diagnostics, genomics, image analysis, marine biology, marine technology, medical devices, nanotechnology, natural product pharmaceuticals, proteomics, regenerative medicine, RNA interference, stem cell research and veterinary science.”
Marlborough has a variety of companies involved in several of the aforementioned fields. Local companies such as CeQur, Advanced Cell Technology, Iquum, Acton Pharmaceuticals and Navilyst are working on cutting edge medical technologies and products.
The Massachusetts Biotechnology Council website (www.massbio.org) notes that Massachusetts is an unsurpassed leader in the global biotechnology industry. Because of the state's rich history in biotechnology, many of its cities and towns, with the support of state government, have increasingly adopted local policies that greatly ease the pathway for renovation or new construction of biotech laboratory and manufacturing facilities. Expedited permitting policies, by-right zoning, supportive public infrastructure projects, pre-permitted biotech sites, and planned area developments are examples of the increasingly supportive public policies in Massachusetts municipalities.
The MassBio BioReady™ Community Campaign, conducted with the support of MassEcon and regional organizations throughout the commonwealth, recognizes this supportive atmosphere. Marlborough, which aspires to expand and grow its life sciences and biotech community, has received a silver rating as a BioReady™ Community.
Robert Coughlin, President of the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council will present the keynote address at the Summit on the topic “The State of BioTech: Nationally, Statewide, and Locally”. His address will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Kevin O”Sullivan, President and CEO of the Worcester-based, Massachusetts Bio-Medical Initiatives and featuring Dr. Susan Windham-Banister, President of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, as well as representatives of local life sciences companies.
The MEDC's major objectives in holding the Summit are: to offer the city's high-tech and life science businesses an opportunity to meet their counterparts and network; to provide them with an opportunity to converse with local political and community leaders; and, to provide an up-date on the MEDC's plans and proposed activities to promote the growth and expansion of the city's high-tech and life science business clusters.
The program will also include the presentation of Mirick O”Connell's second annual Innovation Award.
