Westborough – Robert C. Lewis, 95, passed away Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. Bob, to his friends, and Pop, to his children and grandchildren, lived at the Willows Residential community in Westborough for 23 years.
Born April 8, 1916, in Sharon, Penn., he was the second child of May Murchie and Chester A. Lewis. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1934 and went to work in the Murchie Greenhouse business before enlisting in the Air Transport Command and serving his county in South America. He left the service as a captain.
Mr. Lewis married Elizabeth “Betty” MacMillen in 1947, and thereafter started his family and his career. They had three sons, John, William and Richard, while he worked his way through Fenn College in Cleveland. At the same time, he also worked for National Castings, establishing himself as a financial and inventory specialist.
His career took him to Scottsdale, Ariz.; Shaker Heights, Ohio; and finally Fullerton, Calif., where he and his wife Betty lived for 14 years before his retirement and a move to Athens, Ga. At all of his different homes, he nourished beautiful gardens and lasting friendships.
He enjoyed a game of golf with his wife and sons, and he passed on his appreciation of the game and its lessons for patience and courtesy. He was an active worshiper and member of the Episcopal Church, most recently at St. Stephen's in Westborough, where two stained glass windows crafted by his own hands hang in the chapel.
While living at the Willows, he cared for Betty for five years before her death in 1993. He was an active member of the Willows community. He was president of the Residents” Association for several years, participated in the community store, and regularly performed in the theatre shows. He greatly enjoyed planning and conducting for the residents the regular Musicale programs, playing favorite classical selections and discussing the composers.
He was predeceased by his wife Betty and his sister Jane Mart. He is survived by his sons, John, his wife Ruth and their daughter Elizabeth; William, his wife Rose, and their sons Andrew and his wife Katherine, and Christopher and his wife Abbey; and Richard, his wife Lynne and their sons Malcolm, Benjamin, and Wesley. He is also survived and remembered fondly by nieces, nephews, and their extended families.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heifer International in Little Rock, AR, a favorite organization of his that helps people throughout the world.
His funeral service will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m., in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 3 John St., Westborough. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours.
