Shrewsbury – The event was 50 years in the making and not even a record-breaking October Nor'saster could keep 300 St. Mary School alumni and friends away.

The 50th Anniversary Gala took place at Charter Oak Country Club in Hudson. Guests braved storm conditions to attend the Gala and celebrate St. Mary School's history. Alumnus Brian Beaton, 1989, served as master of ceremonies, awards were presented to special members of the St. Mary School community, and a 25-year-old time capsule was opened by alumni who helped to bury it in 1986. Alumni and friends of the school danced to an 18-piece orchestra and celebrated the school.

Advancement Director Sira Naras explained how involved the alumni are in St. Mary School even years after departing.

“St. Mary School opened the Alumni/Advancement office five years ago with a mission to build and maintain alumni relationships,” Naras said.

“The alumni have responded and today we have reconnected with over 1,000 of our 1,500 alumni. The fact that the 50th Anniversary Gala sold out weeks in advance continues to tell the story of how St. Mary School alumni feel about their elementary school. The alumni value St. Mary School; they say they are appreciative for the major role the school has played in their formative years.”

The Anniversary Gala was followed the next morning by an Alumni Mass. Fifty alumni ranging from the class of 1970 to the class of 2011 volunteered to serve as ministers of the Mass.
