Locals report student news, Nov. 18 editionRegion – Stacie Bancroft of Southborough received a doctor of philosophy degree from Western New England University October 15.

Boston University awarded academic degrees to 1,517 students in September 2011. Local students receiving degrees were Corinne A. Jones, bachelor of arts in Japanese language and literature and Tara B. Dragoon, master of education in curriculum and teaching.

Syed Ali of Shrewsbury has received a Johnson Scholarship to attend Washington and Lee University. The Johnson Scholarship program was established in 2007 as a result of a historic $100 million gift to the university. The competitive scholarships awarded on the basis of candidates’ exceptional academic and personal promise. The scholarships provide at least tuition, room and board, and allow students to graduate debt-free.

Ali won the scholarship in competition against about 200 finalists who were selected from an initial applicant pool of about 2,200 high school seniors from throughout the country and around the world.

Bowdoin College held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony Oct. 28 to honor those undergraduates who distinguish themselves by excellence in scholarship.

Those students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are in the top (highest GPA) 20 percent of each class for the previous academic year. In addition, those scholars who earned a GPA of 4.0 are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Book Award winners.

The following Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are local residents: Daniel Palken, from Northborough, a member of the class of 2014 ; Samuel Silverman, from Westborough, a member of the class of 2014; Matthew Spring, from Westborough, a member of the class of 2013; and Arseniy Sheydvasser, from Southborough, a member of the class of 2012.

The following local students are among the 765 students who entered Colgate University this semester as members of the Class of 2015: Sean Robert Rossi, of Northborough, son of Charles E. Rossi and Sheryl M. Rossi. He is a graduate of Algonquin Regional High School; Jordan Philipps Bennet, of Shrewsbury, son of Thomas W. Bennet Jr. and Kathy A. Bennet. He is a graduate of St. John's High School; Alyssa Rose Kotin, of Shrewsbury, daughter of Andrew S. Kotin and Lora S. Trotsky. She is a graduate of the Bancroft School.
