Southborough – Superintendent of the Department of Public Works Karen Galligan announced at the Nov. 22 Board of Selectmen meeting that the Swap Shop at the Transfer Station will be closing its doors Dec. 1. Residents have not taken the news well, and will try to keep the place open. Local carpenter, Ron Morse, has started a petition drive.

“I thought the town wanted us to recycle,” Morse said, “but getting rid of the Swap Shop will force people to throw away perfectly good items.”

Morse has positioned himself outside the shop and is collecting signatures for the petition. For most who enter the building, the news is news to them.

According to Morse, no one has yet passed up the opportunity to sign the petition. Morse quipped that he would “Occupy the Swap Shop” if necessary.

Transfer Station employees have not answered questions or commented on the closing.
