Portland, Maine – Bernard Goldsmith, 85, formerly of Northborough, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine.

He was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, son of George and Sarah (Mazell) Goldsmith. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a graduate of the University of Michigan and Clark University.

Mr. Goldsmith worked for the United States Foreign Service for 10 years in the 1950s, and was a professor with the History Department at Worcester State University for 34 years.

He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth; his children, Kenneth and his wife Jennifer Goldsmith, Lauren Goldsmith and her husband Thomas Tero, and Sharon Zelonish and her husband Edward; his stepchildren, Megan Munzert and Sean Munzert; and nine grandchildren. His first wife, Elizabeth Chappell Goldsmith, and a son, David Goldsmith, predeceased him.

Services will be held Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2:45 p.m., at Riverside Cemetery in Grafton, preceded by a gathering at 12 p.m. at his home at 8 Dennis Cir., in Northborough.
