Southborough – The town's “Swap Shop” will remain open, at least for the near future. The shop had been due to close on Jan. 7 but was issued a reprieve by the Board of Selectmen at its Jan. 3 meeting. Over 700 residents had signed a petition protesting the closing and another 300 had signed a second petition that had been started by students at the Neary School.
While the shop will remain open indefinitely, town officials are reviewing other options, such as moving and/or expanding it. The officials also said they will be addressing complaints that have been noted by some residents, such as of lack of supervision, hoarding and harassment at the site.
Residents visiting the shop on Jan. 4 were pleased to hear the news.
Echoing the sentiments of many, Beth Fuce said, “I love to have a place that is in my weekly routine where I can donate things of quality that I no longer need. I am excited that the Swap Shop will remain a part of Southborough. It is a great part of the town where working together is a common thread.”
Celeste Kimball agreed, adding, “I think it should stay open as originally intended, as a “leave one, take one” concept. The definition of swap, after all, is exchange or trade.”
