Kathryn R. Waters, 96Weymouth – Kathryn R. (Gilmartin) Waters, 96, a retired registered nurse, formerly of Shrewsbury, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012 after a period of declining health. Her husband of 51 year, James J. Waters, passed away in 2000.

Born in Worcester, a daughter of Bryan and Delia (Williams) Gilmartin, she graduated from St. Peters High School and earned her degree in nursing from St. Vincent Hospital School of nursing. She lived in Shrewsbury for over 31 years before moving in 2008 to be closer to her daughter in Weymouth.

She is survived by her three devoted daughters, Maureen Waters-White and her husband Stephen of Weymouth, Shelia Waters-Fucci of Torrington, Conn., and Mary Elizabeth Hassler of Richmond Virginia; four grandchildren she cherished, Kathryn Palmer, James Fucci, Nicholas and Caroline Hassler; a great-grandson, Matthew; and nieces, nephews and extended family. A brother, Stephen Gilmartin, and two sisters, Mary Werkowski and Margaret F. Good, all predeceased her.

Mrs. Waters worked more than 32 years as a Registered Nurse before retiring in 1982. She worked patient care at St. Vincent Hospital, private duty for the former City Hospital and privately for the Rhodes Family in Worcester. After retirement, she continued to volunteer her nursing skills until the age of 91 for St. Bernard's Free Medical Clinic, St. Vincent Hospital Oncology and the St. Vincent Hospital, Our Lady of Providence Medical Health Center.

She was a member of St. Anne's Church, the St. Vincent Hospital Alumni Association, the Massachusetts and National Nurses Association, the Guild of Our Lady of Providence, and the Shrewsbury Senior Citizens.

The funeral celebrating her life will be held Saturday, Jan. 14 from the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St Anne's Church, 130 Boston Turnpike Rd., Shrewsbury. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Friday, Jan. 13, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the funeral home.
