The C.A. six tips of the day for Feb. 22Region – Today is Wednesday, Feb. 22. It is also Ash Wednesday, the day acknowledged by Christians around the world as the first day of Lent.

Today is the 32nd anniversary of the “Miracle on Ice.” On this day in 1980, the U.S. hockey team beat what was thought to be the most invincible team in the world, the Russians, in the Lake Placid Olympics. Two days later, the young U.S. team won the gold medal, beating Finland 4-2.

1. Yesterday in Westborough there were heroics of a different kind. Firefighters from five local towns – Grafton, Hopkinton, Northborough, Shrewsbury and Marlborough – helped Westborough firefighters battle a 4-alarm fire. Bravery is most certainly perching from a ladder truck while you are inches away from a raging fire. It's also standing on a rooftop three stories high hacking away at a roof as a means to control the fire below you.

2. In honor of those brave firefighters here's another tip –

The commonwealth of Massachusetts Human Resources Division has announced Firefighter Examinations for cities and towns for 2012. The Human Resources Division (HRD) is currently accepting applications for both components of the 2012 Firefighter, Municipal Service Examination.

This examination consists of two components: the written examination and the Entry Level Physical Ability Test (ELPAT). Candidates must apply, take and pass both components in order to be placed on the eligible list for appointment in a civil service city or town.

The written examination component will be held on April 28, 2012 at various sites across the commonwealth. The ELPAT will be administered from February 2012 through August 2012 at the Hudson National Guard Armory in Hudson.
