Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School holds “Reality Check”Marlborough – Community leaders Patriot Ambulance and Marlborough Savings Bank sponsored the “Reality Check” at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School March 23. Patriot Ambulance was the major sponsor of the event and Marlborough Savings Bank was a supporting sponsor. Their sponsorship investment will provide “padfolios with calculators to help the students make better financial decisions in the future.”
A joint service project of the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Marlborough Rotary Club and the State Scholars program, the Reality Check presented students with a financial learning experience in an interactive and fun game format. The Reality Check was held for the state scholars of the sophomore class – approximately 140 students – to give them a taste of financial reality as they step into the adult world getting their first real part-time job and their drivers” licenses. More than 30 volunteers from local businesses and organizations participated in this intensive game to teach teens the importance of budgeting a paycheck.
“I have volunteered at the Assabet Valley High School Reality Check,” said Marlborough Rotary Club President Elaine McDonald. “It's just an incredible experience – even fun – to see how the kids learn from it. I's really proud that the Rotary Club started this program in Marlborough.”
The Reality Check presented the students with real business practitioners playing themselves as bankers, auto dealers, insurance agents, grocery store, etc. The organizers invited those who may wish to volunteer, to fill some of the counseling and paymaster roles at the Reality Check.

Peggie Thorsen was this year's Marlborough Rotary Club Reality Fair chair.

“In addition to the good feeling you get from the community service aspect of the project,” she said, “the Reality Check presents the volunteers with a rare opportunity to make a positive impression upon their future market.”
