The C.A. six tips of the day for April 12Region – Today is Thursday, April 12, the 103rd day of 2012.

There are two significant anniversaries regarding traveling into space today. In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin became the first human being to travel into space as well as becoming the first to orbit the planet.

Two decades later, the space shuttle Columbia became the first reusable manned spacecraft to travel into space. After taking off from Cape Canaveral, it traveled 54 hours before touching down at California's Edwards Air Force Base on April 14.

Also on this day, in 1945, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the longest serving president in American history, died of a cerebral hemorrhage three months into his fourth term.

Today's birthdays include country star Vince Gill (1957), former teen idol David Cassidy (1950), late-night talk show host David Letterman (1947), and best-selling author Tom Clancy (1947).

Here are six tips for the day –

1. The Subliminal Messages art exhibition at Subliminal Skate Park in Shrewsbury will be on display until April 20. It is described as “work inspired by skateboard and street culture, as well as creative and innovative use of the theme.”

2. The MBTA has just announced that fares will be rising for commuters who take the trains out of the suburbs west of Boston, including Westborough and Southborough. Westborough officials are seeking a volunteer to represent the town at meetings that will be held in Boston this spring. Interested residents should contact Town Manager Jim Malloy at [email protected].

3. Senior centers aren's just places for people of a certain age to just go and play bingo. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) They are also vital lifelines to a community's senior population. Here's information on two programs recently announced by the Marlborough Senior Center.

4. Here's a great story about some very inspiring young athletes who recently participated in a meet at Algonquin Regional High School.
