Shrewsbury – The Friends of Shrewsbury Crew began selling tickets for the 2012 Calendar Raffle April 1 and will continue the sale through April 30. The calendar raffle is in its seventh year and was well received last year. Winners receive generous prizes such as a weekend get-away, Red Sox tickets and even cash. $10 buys 30 days of chances to win.
Shrewsbury Crew, founded in 1937 by Kenneth F. Burns, has had a successful history in the town, with girls crew being added in 1975 by Burns” daughter, Barbara Caron. Caron's daughter, Pam, and her husband, Russ Krause, are still involved in the program. Boys and girls enjoy both fall and spring crew.
The sport of rowing is very expensive, due to the high costs of shells, oars, maintenance and related equipment. The Calendar Raffle is the team's main fundraiser for the year.
