CARFit for Older Drivers to be held May 5 in ConcordConcord – Older drivers are often the safest drivers, in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur, due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies. A proper “fit” in one's car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety, but also the safety of others.

Emerson Hospital's Center for Sports Rehabilitation and Specialty Services, which has locations in Concord and Westford, is sponsoring a free CARFit program for older adults Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 57 Ornac in Concord.

At a CARFit event, a team of trained technicians and/or health professionals work with each participant to ensure their vehicle properly fits them for maximum comfort and safety. A 12-point check list takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

The CARFit program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers, and/or increase their mobility in the community. Participants have a chance to discuss findings with an occupational therapist.

The event will be held rain or shine. Registration is required by calling Emerson's Center for Sports Rehabilitation and Specialty Services at 978- 287-8200.
