Colonial Garden Club plant sale blooms May 12 in MarlboroughMarlborough – The warm spring weather has area gardeners itching to get their hands dirty and there's no better place to find a huge selection of plants at great prices than at the Colonial Garden Club's annual plant sale. This year, the popular event will take place Saturday, May 12, from 9 a.m. to noon, in downtown Marlborough at the intersection of Routes 20 and 85.

“This is a terrific event for experienced gardeners and beginners alike,” said Karen McEachern, plant sale co-chair. “The vast majority of plants are donated from our members” own gardens, so customers can be sure that they are purchasing specimens that do well here in Marlborough. It's also a great place to swap tips with other horticultural fanatics, or get expert advice on what to plant, and where.”

Typically, the event features over 100 genera of plants, including an interesting selection of plants from members who have particular specialties, including dahlias, shade garden gems, shrubs, sun loving dazzlers, and ornamental trees. Houseplants for the indoor gardener will also be on hand.

The majority of plants are priced in the $5 range, which is a terrific value. In addition, customers will receive free groundcover with their purchases, while supplies last.

“There will also be a range of garden-themed gift items available, just in time for Mother's Day,” said Karen Seekamp, plant sale co-chair. “We have some beautiful hand-painted birdhouses, special potted plant arrangements, garden ornaments, and even a hand-crafted, leaf-imprinted concrete bench.”

In line with the club's education mission, children 12 and under will be given a free plant, while supplies last. Proceeds from the plant sales enable the club to continue supporting beautification and conservation efforts throughout the city, and fund the scholarships for local high school seniors pursuing horticultural careers.

“The plant sale, located at the intersection of Route 20 and 85, is in the parking lot next to Chin's Garden, and directly across from The Vin Bin,” McEachern added. “It's easy to find, and there's plenty of free parking. It's a great way to spend a spring morning, and pick up a few gifts for all the Moms on your list!”

The Colonial Garden Club holds regular meetings on the second Wednesday of the month from September through June, at 7 p.m., at the Jaworek Elementary School, 44 Hosmer St., Marlborough. Prospective members are always welcome to attend. For more information, visit www.colonialgardenclub.org.
