Region –Today is Friday, May 11, the 132nd day of 2012.
On this day in history in 1997 Gary Kasparov, the chess champion widely regarded as the greatest who has ever lived, lost to a most peculiar opponent – the IBM supercomputer Deep Blue.
Today marks a tragic day in soccer history – in 1985, 50 soccer fans were killed when a fire broke out at a stadium in Bradford, England. Adding to the tragedy was the fact that the wooden roof, on which the flames spread in just a matter of minutes, was due to be replaced later week by a steel one.
Today's birthdays include – the late composer Irving Berlin (1888), Louis Farrakhan, a Nation of Islam minister (1933), the late actress Natasha Richardson (1963) who died in tragic ski accident in 2009 and the late surrealist painter Salvador Dali (1904).
And of course, Happy Mother's Day (a few days early!) to all our fabulous mothers out there in the C.A readership area!
