Howard A. Allen, 85Howard A. Allen, 85Worcester/Westborough – Howard A. Allen, 85 years old, died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Worcester on Thursday, May 10, 2012, after a lengthy, but determined fight against lung and kidney cancer. He was the son of the late Howard A. Allen and Evelyn (Smith) Allen, and lived in Worcester, Shrewsbury, and 43 years in Westborough, returning to Worcester in 2003.

Mr. Allen leaves his wife of nearly 64 years, Esther E. (Noponen) Allen; two sons, Ronald H. Allen and his wife Patricia of Holden and Bruce T. Allen and his partner Kathryn Wilkinson of Dudley; and a daughter, Gail L. Verge of Westborough. He also leaves five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, as well as several cousins, nephews and nieces.

He was born Feb. 9, 1927, in Holden and attended public schools in Greendale, and later attended Worcester Boys Trade School. He was veteran of World War II, serving two years in the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer, 3rd Class.

Mr. Allen was a lifelong member of Greendale People's Community Church in Worcester, where he was active in several groups and clubs throughout the years. He had a great love for, and appreciation of, old Hollywood movies, travel, big waves on Cape Cod and being involved in family events and holiday celebrations. He was the prototype “fan(atic)” for the Boston Red Sox for his entire life.

Mr. Allen worked many years a milkman for Pinecroft Dairy in West Boylston and Valley Brook Dairy in Worcester. Following that, he worked for 25 years as an inspector for Bay State Abrasives in Westborough. After his retirement at age 62, he had another 15-year career driving a children's bus for the town of Northborough Family and Youth Services.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday, May 16, followed by a memorial service at 12 noon at the Greendale People's Community Church in Worcester. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden.
