Marlborough ?A vacant, overgrown lot on Main Street has been turned into a new park, thanks to a collaboration between the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the Marlborough Savings Bank.
According to MEDC officials, the 167 Main St. lot has been vacant since the restaurant that was formerly there was destroyed in a fire in 2010. Landscapers cleared away overgrown brush and leveled the area to create an open space. The new park has several picnic tables as well.
Mayor Arthur Vigeant noted that he was excited that the partnership addressed the vacant lot in a way that resulted in an enhancement of the downtown area.
“I am very pleased with what the MEDC and Marlborough Savings Bank have been able to achieve together,” said Vigeant. “With the assistance of my partners on the City Council, we are taking an underperforming asset and turning it into an area that will beautify this corridor of the city.”
A ribbon cutting to officially open the space for public use is tentatively scheduled for early June. Details on the ceremony, which will be open to the public, will be released soon.
MEDC is the state-chartered economic development corporation for the city of Marlborough.
