On this day in 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was finally opened. The bridge, which spans the East River, and connects Manhattan and Brooklyn, took 14 years to build. 26 people died during the construction of the bridge. The engineer who designed the bridge, John A. Roebling, actually died just prior to the project starting; he had been in an accident and subsequently developed a fatal case of tetanus.
On this day in 1964,300 fans were killed and another 500 injured in a soccer match in Lima, Peru. A disallowed goal in a close game between Peru and Argentina angered the largely Peruvian crowd, resulting in widespread rioting.
