On this day in 1914, a series of errors, exacerbated by fog, caused one of the worst maritime disasters in history. 1,073 people died in the early morning hours that day when the “Empress of Ireland” ocean liner and the Norwegian coal freighter, the Storstad, collided on the St. Lawrence River near Pointe-au-Père, Quebec .

The Northborough Junior Girl Scout Troop 30650 will be holding a pet food and supply drive through June 15 at the Northborough Free Library, 34 Main St., to benefit the Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton. Baypath is a wonderful non-profit, no-kill animal shelter that places over 700 cats and dog with families each year.?
