Dr. Edwin J. Henrie, 76Dr. Edwin J. Henrie, 76Westborough – Dr. Edwin J. Henrie, 76, of Westborough, MA, formerly of Swansboro, N.C. and Newport, R.I., died suddenly Monday, May 21, 2012 after a period of ill health.

Son of the late Edwin H. Henrie and Ruth (Bennetch) Henrie, and stepson of the late Dorothy MacNally Henrie, Dr. Henrie was born in Reading, PA, and grew up in Lansdowne, PA. He was a 1958 graduate of Pennsylvania State University and received his M.D. from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital in 1962.

Dr. Henrie served as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy from 1963 until 1975, reaching the rank of Commander. He then went into private practice at the Aquidneck Medical Center in Newport, R.I., where he remained until 1990.

In 1992, Dr. Henrie moved to North Carolina, serving at the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune. While there, he established a sports medicine practice, and instituted a new program of physical conditioning for Marines at the base. During his time on active duty, Dr. Henrie served in Vietnam and Kuwait, receiving the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Retiring in 1997, Dr. Henrie then actively pursued his interests in woodworking, hunting, physical fitness and other outdoor activities. He was an avid gardener and cook, and an active member of the Swansboro United Methodist Church. Like his father, Dr. Henrie was a meticulous dresser, known for his signature bow tie.

He leaves his beloved wife, Peggy Henrie of Westborough, MA; daughter Kathleen Ross and husband Amory of Newport, R.I.; son E. Hunterson Henrie II and wife Leslie Wilcott-Henrie of Lexington, MA; and stepchildren Daintria McClure, Winsor Baker, Richard Baker, and Wendy Scott. He is also survived his grandsons, Amory Ross Jr., Tyler Ross, Alexander Henrie, and Conor Henrie, and eight step-grandchildren.

Dr. Henrie will be interred with full military honors at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA, Thursday, June 7, at 1 p.m., and all are welcome to attend. The Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
