Region – Today is Tuesday, June 5, the 157th day of 2012. If you lived in England, Scotland, Wales or one of the other countries under British rule, you would have today off from school or work.? That's because today is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday, a day to honor Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years as monarch of the Commonwealth realms, and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations.
On this day in 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy was shot several times by a 22-year old Palestinian man, Sirhan Sirhan. Kennedy, who had just won the California presidential primary, and was considered a leading contender in that year's election, died a day later.
An icon of American politics, Ronald Reagan, the 40th U.S. president, died on this day in 2004 at age 93. Reagan had enjoyed a robust life after leaving the White House in 1989 until he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1994.
And on this day in 2004, singers Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony wed in California. That marriage, however, ended seven years later.
Today's birthdays include – actor Mark Wahlberg (1971); musician Kenny G (1956) and Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden (1951).
