Northborough/Southborough – Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) sophomore attack Mike Wood (bottom) fires the game-winning shot despite stiff defense from St. John's High School senior defense Brendan Melanson (#7, right) during their Central Mass Division I semi-final meeting June 5 at Foley Stadium in Worcester.
In a rematch of last year's CMass Division I final, top-seeded Algonquin hosted eighth-seeded St. John's. ARHS junior attack Davis Kraft scored first, but SJ was quick to match the goal and go on top, holding?the lead through three quarters (3-1 at the end of the first,
4-3 at the half, and 6-4 at the end of the third quarter). However, ARHS sophomore attack Mike Wood tied the game with 7:53 left in the fourth, and then scored the winner unassisted after stealing the ball with 3:54 to go, to seal the 7-6 win.
Algonquin, who defeated St. John's last year for the first-ever Central Mass Boys LAX championship won by a public high school, will defend its title against Grafton High School Saturday, June 9 at Foley Stadium.
