Region ?Today is Monday, June 18, the 169th day of 2012.
Before Tiger Woods was even born, never mind a household name, one of the greatest golfers in the world was Arnold Palmer. On this day in 1980, he had a come from behind victory to beat another young golfer who would also soon capture the country's attention – Jack Nicklaus.
Surprisingly, in spite of all his success, this was the only U.S. Open victory in Palmer's career.
On this day in history, the War of 1812 began between the United States and Great Britain.
And on this day in 1983, Dr. Sally Ride became the first American woman to travel on a space mission.
Celebrating a birthday today include musical icon Sir Paul McCartney (1942), country star Blake Shelton (1976) and ?film critic Roger Ebert (1942).

On Wednesday, June 20, the Westborough Public Library will present “Creating a Sacred Master Bedroom”as the kick-off event for this year's Adult Summer Reading Program, “Between the Covers.” Julie Pelletier-Rutkowski, from Feng Shui Services of New England, will present a workshop to help participants create a bedroom where they can feel awake, restored, relaxed, and ready to take on the day in a powerful and empowering way. The program is free and open to the public.
