On this day in 1982, John W. Hinckley, Jr. was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the attempted assassination of U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
Hinckley shot the president and three of his attendants on March 30, 1981; Reagan recovered from his wounds but Press Secretary James Brady, who was shot in the head, suffered permanent brain damage.
On this day in 2004, SpaceShipOne became the first privately funded spaceplane ?to achieve spaceflight. It was developed by Mojave Aerospace Ventures.
And on this day in 2006 the planet Pluto's newly discovered moons were officially named Nix and Hydra.
Celebrating a birthday today – Prince William, second in line to the British throne (1982); Kris Allen, the 2009 American Idol winner; and Rebecca Black, whose self-released 2011 hit single “Friday” thrilled pre-teens (1997).
