On this day in 1922, the American Library Association awarded the first Newbery Medal, honoring the year's best children's book, to The Story of Mankind by Hendrik Willem van Loon.
On this day in 1950, President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to assist in repelling an invasion by communist North Korea.
And on this day in 1976 the first of 284 victims of Ebola, a deadly virus, died when the disease spread through the Sudan.

During the varied storms of 2011, many town officials lamented that there had not been enough tree maintenance and pruning before those storms, resulting in thousands of dollars of damage and power outages. According to the town of Northborugh's website, National Grid has identified and is in the process of cutting down trees this summer that are thought to be a threat to utility wires.
