The C.A. six tips of the day for July 3

    By Bonnie Adams, Government Editor

Region – Today is Tuesday, July 3, the 184th day of 2012. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, July 3 is the start of the “Dog Days of summer,” the hottest days of the year.

The cliché goes, “there's no such thing as bad publicity,” but after the week Tom Cruise has had, he might disagree with that statement. It was on this day in 1962 that the embattled movie star/Scientologist/ soon-to-be thrice divorced Cruise was born.

July 3 is a dark day in rock and roll history. On this day in 1969 Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones was found dead of an apparent accidental drowning in his Sussex, England pool. Two years later, on this day, the Doors iconic lead singer Jim Morrison died of an apparent heart attack in a Paris bathtub.

On this day in 1839, the first state normal school (or as it is commonly known, a teachers” college) in the United States was opened in Lexington, MA. This school later became Framingham State College.

Those who will most likely be having a nicer birthday than Cruise today include – actress/Maxim model Olivia Munn (1980); Sandra Lee TV personality (1966), and attorney Gloria Allred (1941).

Here are six tips for the day –

1.? We love summer, but mosquitoes, not so much. Hudson doesn's either – the town has put together a plan to deal with the annoying pests.

2.? Don's forget – there will be all sorts of fun for the entire family as Shrewsbury celebrates the Fourth of July on July 4th!

3.? How cool is it that the town of Westborough runs a golf course? ?Check out the Westboro Country Club website (http://westborocountryclub.com/index.html) to find out more information about this very reasonably-priced public 9 hole par 36 golf course.

    4. Westborough celebrated the Fourth a few days early (Friday, June 29) with a fabulous Block Party. Check the link to see some of the pictures C.A. contributing photographer Ed Kavorski, Jr. took that night.

    5. What do terrorism, homeland security, white collar crime and health care fraud all have in common? On any given day, they are on the agenda of Carmen Ortiz, the U.S. Attorney for the district of Massachusetts. Ortiz was the guest speaker at the Shrewsbury League of Women Voters” Annual Meeting last Thursday, June 28.

    6. Marisa Giglio, the talented (and humble) Marlborough High School softball star, is featured in our Athlete's Spotlight this week.
