Region – Today is Thursday, July 5, the 186th day of 2012. Yesterday was of course, America's Independence Day but today Algeria, Cape Verde and Venezuela all celebrate their respective Independence Days.
On this day, a new type of women's bathing suit, the “bikini,” was revealed in Paris. The designer, Louis Reard, allegedly came up with the name in honor of? U.S. atomic tests that were taking place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean.
On this day in 1975, Arthur Ashe became the first black man to ever win the Wimbledon men's championship. To do so, he beat the defending champion, Jimmy Connors.
And on this day in 1938, Spam, the luncheon meat beloved by many and reviled by others hits the shelves of supermarkets everywhere.
Today's birthdays – Paul DelVecchio, aka DJ Pauly D (1980), baseball great Richard “Goose” Gossage (1951) and the late P.T. Barnum (1810).
