Region – Today is Friday, July 6, the 187th day of 2012. Continuing the theme of independence this week, today the Comoros celebrate their independence from France and the Malawi celebrate their freedom from the United Kingdom.
On this day in 1933, the first Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played in Chicago's Comiskey Park. The American League won that inaugural contest against their foes, the National League, 4-2.
On this day in 1944, what started out as a fun adventure ended in terrible tragedy as a fire quickly spread under the big top of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in Hartford, CT. ?In a matter of minutes, 167 people, mostly children, were killed and another 682 seriously injured. In 1950, an Ohio man, Robert Segee confessed that it was he who had started the fire after an apparition of an Indian on a flaming horse had urged him to do so. Segee was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 22 years in prison.
And on this day in 1957 the great American tennis champion, Althea Gibson, became the first black athlete to ever win a Wimbledon title.
