David E. Indge, 85Westborough – David E. Indge, 85, a lifetime resident of Westborough, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012 at the Whittier Rehabilitation Hospital in Westborough. He was the devoted husband of 44 years to Sharlene P. (Stadig) Indge.

David was the son of the late Herbert and Constance (Everett) Indge. He graduated from Westborough High School in 1944, Worcester Junior College in 1949 and M.I.T. in 1952. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was an A & E Mechanic for Company 54 and Company 47.

He worked on a military aviation project on top of Mt. Washington for five years. He did research and testing on airplane wings, helicopter blades, and jet engines. During his time there, he was commended for extinguishing a jet engine explosion which saved the base.

David was employed as a chief mechanical engineer. He was the head of research and development for the David Clark Company in Worcester. During his tenure, he was credited for many patents including headsets and microphones for both the military and professional sports. He had patents on full pressure flight suits for military fighter jets and military spy planes. He also had many patents for the spacesuits used for NASA on the space shuttle flights. He retired in 1989, after 26 years with the company.

He was a dedicated member of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Westborough. He was involved in all facets of the church from its facility and board to the choir. David was a charter member of the Westborough Community Chorus, a member of the Westborough Players Club and the Southborough Senior Singers. He also enjoyed fixing clocks, just as his father, Herbert, did.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Linnette I. Clark and her husband, Scott, of Shrewsbury; one son, Thomas A. Indge and his wife, Kristin, of Leominster; and two grandchildren, Alison Clark and Charles Indge. He was the brother of the late Joyce Ricker, Alfred Indge, Daisy White, and John Indge.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10:30 A.M., in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 64 West Main St., Westborough. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Harper-Pickering Westborough Funeral Home, 62 West Main St., Westborough.
