Region – Today is Monday, Aug. 13, the 226th ?day of 2012.
On this day last year, 7 people were killed and another 45 were injured from a hurricane-force gust of wind that toppled the stage at the Indiana State Fair, moments before the country band Sugarland was due to perform.
On this day in 2004, another weather-related tragedy as Hurricane Charley, a category 4 storm, hit Punta Gorda, FL, killing 10 people and causing an estimated $15 billion in damage.
And on this day in 1918, Opha Mae Johnson became the first woman to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.
Today's birthdays – the late film director Alfred Hitchcock (1889); the late actor best known as the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz, Bert Lahr (1895); and the late Hawaiian entertainer, Don Ho (1930).
