Today is Wednesday, Aug. 15, the 228th day of 2012.
On this day in 1969, one of the most famous music festivals in history – Woodstock – started. Performers included The Who, Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, and many more during the three-day festival held in Woodstock, NY.
On this day in 1961, construction was started on the Berlin Wall, the most well-known symbol of the Cold War. The wall divided Germany for nearly three decades before coming down in 1990.
And on this day in 1914, US vessel Ancon became the first ship to travel on the Panama Canal, the American-built waterway that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The 40 mile canal, now under the control of Panama, cost close to $400 million to build.

3. A meeting will be held in Marlborough on Aug. 23 to acquaint senior citizens with a new program that could help qualified participants reduce their taxes.
