Region – Today is Friday, Aug. 17, the 230th day of 2012.
On this day in 1998, Bill Clinton became the first U.S. President to be called to testify before the Office of Independent Council as the subject of a Grand Jury investigation. In the ensuing months, the names “White Water”, “Kenneth Starr” and “Monica Lewinsky” became some of the most buzzed-about names of the year.
On this day in 1933, baseball great Lou Gehrig played in his 1308th game, breaking the previous record set by Everett Scott. Gehrig's record would stand until broken by Cal Ripken Jr. in 1998.
And on this day in 2008, swimming star Michael Phelps became the first person in history to win eight gold medals in one Olympics. Phelps won gold in 5 individual and 3 relay races at the Beijing Olympics.
