Local executive chef to be guest judge in “Taste of Berlin” eventBerlin – Award-winning Executive Chef Phyllis Kaplowitz of Baker's Best will be a guest judge for “Taste of Berlin,” a benefit for the Berlin Family Food Pantry. The event will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m., at First Parish Church, 24 Central St., Berlin. Tickets will be available at the door for $8 (there will be a discount for seniors and children) for an all-you-can-eat buffet of spaghetti, salad, and dessert.

Chef Kaplowitz, a finalist in the Food Network's television show “Chopped,” will be judging entries of pasta sauce, salad dressing, and chocolate chip cookies, and awarding the best in each category. She will also be available during this event to talk to people about her experiences on “Chopped.”

“I’m looking forward to sampling other people's food for a change,” said Kaplowitz. “This sounds like a fun way to spend an evening, and it is certainly a great cause.”

In addition to the competition's guest judge, Taste of Berlin is asking all attendees to judge entries at this event. A “People's Choice” award and a “Kids Choice” award will be presented at the end of the evening.

“Besides tasting the entries, a full buffet of spaghetti, salad, and dessert will be on hand so no one goes home hungry,” said Linda Wallace, chair of the Outreach Team of First Parish Church in Berlin which is hosting the event. “There are hungry people in every town, every night across this country and that's what we’re trying to prevent, at least in Berlin. All proceeds raised will go to the Berlin Family Food Pantry.”

Taste of Berlin is still looking for people to enter their pasta sauce, salad dressing and chocolate chip cookies for judging. For more information, visit the First Parish Church website at www.fpcberlin.org.
