Marlborough – The Friends of the Marlborough Public Library (FMPL) and the Assabet Valley Camera Club (AVCC) of Hudson recently held its 19th “Friends Annual Photography Show.” Located in the Bigelow Auditorium at the library, 35 West Main St., the gallery showcased both black-and-white and color photographs by artists in the greater Marlborough area.

Ray Johnson, the FMPL president, explained the reason behind the show.

“The photo show is offered as part of a season-long approved schedule of free admission programs offered by “The Friends” as our by-laws state: “to add to the cultural life of the library and the city of Marlborough”,” he said.

An open house and reception Feb.4 marked the commencement of the photography show. Pianist Kim Ward, of Sudbury, entertained with background music. She also plays for The Friends “First Lady's Reception for the Arts” in The Friends Annual Regional Juried Art Show, which just celebrated its 41st year November 2012.

The varied collection of 49 photographs was hung on the gallery walls by AVCC President Paul Weisbach, photography show AVCC co-chairs Todd and Maureen Mathieson, Friends Photography Chair Jim Nims, and a collection of AVCC members.

According to Johnson, “the funds collected from the entry fees and any photos sold go into “The Friends” treasury?to pay for the expenses of?the show. Usually, though, expenses exceed any funds raised and thus the expenses are supplemented by allocation of a budget line item.”

Winners included: Color Photograph: John Gill (first place), Dave Morin (second place) and David Brown (third place). Black and White Photograph: Sue Abrahamsen (first place), Wil Laforte (second place) and Richard Tranfaglia, Jr. (third place).
